The first ever Hummingbird Robot Petting Zoo Makeathon was a smashing success. Robotic Genius and Inventor, Tom Lauwer, and his entire team created an all out coding and creating weekend in anticipation of the Pittsburgh Maker Faire. Mentors from Allegheny Intermediate Unit, the Sprout Fund, Carnegie Mellon University, and Google joined students from Fox Chapel, Moon, Montour, Carlynton, Pittsburgh Public, and Canon-McMillan to create pets for the Children’s Museum Make Shop exhibit during the Maker Faire. “The entire experience was really interesting. It was something that hadn’t been done before. We were given time and space to figure everything out.” said Vishi Agrawal of Fox Chapel Area School District. Vishi and Sara Rittick (Moon Area School District) created a unicorn that reacts to distance and light sensors. Students created bats, elephants, unicorns, monkeys, spiders, triceratops, and dragons to add to the Petting Zoo. “Participating in the Makeathon has reinforced the importance of collaborating with others, learning more about technology that governs society, and expanding my coding knowledge ” says Ellen Pil whose enthusiasm was palpable! It was a truly enjoyable weekend for all involved!
