South Fayette High School’s STEM Team Regional Champions
Congratulations to South Fayette High School’s STEM Team who took first place, out of 15 teams, in the Governor’s STEM Competition regional finals, held at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit on February 18th. The goal of the competition was to have high school teams across the state design, develop and present a solution to some problem, and the teams’ solutions should positively impact the largest number of citizens in the Commonwealth of PA. The design concept began in September within Mr. Brian Garlick’s after school STEM Club.
With a focused audience and problem in mind, the team developed and utilized existing business and community partnerships: a generous thank you for all their help so far: Universal Electric Corp., Broadmore Senior Living, Country Meadows, Allegheny Educational Systems, and to our community engineering advisor, Mrs. Lisa Passyn.
Competition day consisted of 3 phases; an on-site team problem solving egg drop challenge, a 10 minute presentation on STEM in the South Fayette Community; and lastly, a 20 minute presentation on the multiple innovations the team came up with and engineered into their new geriatrics walker design called “The LifeSafer.”
Team members, Eishan Ashwat, Brooke Ley, Brennan McCann, Cara Price and Jackie Witwicki completed all phases of the competition with the professionalism, maturity, confidence and academic and work-ready skill levels that their previous experience in their four years of project based learning programs have afforded them.
As Mr. Garlick noted, “this academic competition and 1st place finish, is equivalent to the WPIAL championships in athletics.”
The team will next compete against the champions from the other 28 Intermediate Units from all over the State for the first ever 2015 Governor’s STEM Competition state championship, May 29th, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, PA.
